Several Alamance lawyers have removed themselves from the county’s court-appointed attorneys list after the state’s Office of Indigent Services said they could no longer pay the $75-per hour rate.
Attorneys say they can’t afford the reduced rate and maintain their private practices. The pay cut is necessary because IDS is facing a $12 million shortfall. One defense attorney warned that Superior Court Judge Rob Johnson could force attorneys to take cases if needed.
