Objective analysis of available data, as well as common sense, should lead one to conclude that economies improve not by master planning, but by The Wee People happily, diligently, and creatively producing items worthy of trade. Economies may also be stimulated by war, but we’re supposed to be too enlightened to pursue that path anymore.

But in Canton, leadership wants to pursue economic renewal through planning. My most sarcastic of satires could not be more farcical than the article in the Smoky Mountain News. It appears the experts don’t know exactly what they want, but they feel a new energy coming on. The word “energy” is used six times in the article. As if screaming to have the hoax exposed, experts speak of “more energy,” “building energy,” “creating a new energy,” and “generating energy.” Most importantly, they would like members of the public to show their loyalty to the cult by saying they can feel the energy, too.
