The Watauga County Board of Elections is expressing confliction (1, 2) over locating one-stop voting on the Appalachian State University campus. There are concerns the immobile student community will be underrepresented or disenfranchised. This is less socially just than the tradition of leaving Ma and Pa Kettle to organize their whole monthly trip to town around election day and then suffer a broken-down wheel halfway. A good model I have mentioned is Buncombe County’s location of the new Election Services building at the same intersection as Planned Parenthood. That’s because it is more socially just to have conservatives cry injustice than progressives. Were we to desire more democracy, we could just let folks vote online. Sure the system could be abused, but do you suppose this one wasn’t?
