A Wake County grand jury issued a felony indictment this week in connection with an alleged illegal scheme involving campaign donations to North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue. Carolina Journal Executive Editor Don Carrington first brought the scheme to light last fall. Managing Editor Rick Henderson discussed the indictment this week in a pair of interviews on WPTF Radio’s afternoon programs. WPTF used portions of Henderson’s comments in subsequent newscasts. He also appears this weekend on Curtis Media Group’s “People In Politics,” discussing items including lawmakers’ efforts to strip money from the Golden LEAF. Meanwhile, CJ reporters continue to attract attention for their legislative coverage. The Lincoln Tribune promoted Associate Editor Anthony Greco‘s recap of last week’s legislative action, his preview for this week, and his profile of “Laura’s Law.” The Tar Heel Tribune also picked up the preview article. The Lincoln Tribune published Associate Editor Sara Burrows‘ report on efforts to exempt North Carolinians from ObamaCare’s individual health insurance mandate, Henderson’s report identifying the groups who have rallied for higher taxes in the next state budget, and Associate Editor David Bass‘ exclusive about a potential fight between lawmakers and Perdue over the best way to approach regulatory reform. N.C. Senate Republicans’ daily press e-mails have promoted Bass’ articles about regulatory reform, Attorney General Roy Cooper’s appeals in an air-quality lawsuit against the TVA, and Perdue’s potential proposals for legalizing video poker. The Senate GOP also promoted Greco’s latest CarolinaJournal.tv report on a bill to lift the state’s charter school cap and his article on the political fight surrounding a deficit-reduction bill. NC Rumors picked up a CJ staff report detailing the calendar of interest groups attempting to influence legislative business. Outside of the General Assembly, the Lincoln Tribune, Tar Heel Tribune, and Mint Hill Times all promoted contributor Hal Young‘s report on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg public school system’s efforts to open its books for online review. NC Rumors highlighted the transcript of a CJ interview about ObamaCare with libertarian syndicated columnist Deroy Murdock.
