The Burlington Times News eulogizes Rep. Cary Allred:

He was a friend to taxpayers who took it upon himself to fight battles for those not in a position to challenge the system themselves. He was a rock upon which thousands of constituents could rely no matter the party affiliation or social station. In fact, Allred was fond of boasting that people crossed district lines to seek his help when others in elected office turned a deaf ear.

No problem was too small or inconsequential when an Alamance County resident asked for it, especially when it came to battling the bureaucracy that paralyzes government and disrupts the lives of those it touches. Need a stoplight? Allred was on it. Want a permit to dig a new well but regulations were gumming the works? Allred took up the cause.

Liberals often wonder how voters can return a guy like Allred to office time and again, and this is why. Too bad late in his career Allred posed a danger to himself and others on the road with his excessive speed and drinking.
