The search committee charged with finding a replacement for departin
UNC System President Molly Broad has decided that – surprise, surprise
– to attract a new president, the position must be paid substantially
more than Broad’s $312,000. Writing in The Daily Record of Dunn, Jon Sanders made the case
that exponential salary growth for university officials is a California
fad that North Carolina can do without. Sanders took readers down
memory lane to the departure of NC State’s Marye Anne Fox, who took the
chancellor’s job at UC San Diego for roughly $100,000 more than she was
paid at State. That began a trend in the California system of bumping
executive salaries. And now, that trend appears to have made its way to
North Carolina, where several UNC System hires have been given tens of
thousands more than their predecessors earned.
