Caterpillar Inc. had its grand opening yesterday. The Winston-Salem Journal editorializes:

There was the company’s announcement on a blazing summer day two years ago that it was coming to Winston-Salem, then the day one year ago this month when officials pushed their shovels into what had been farmland — the groundbreaking for the new plant. And long before, there was a well-organized effort on the part of our local and state leaders to land the plant. Those efforts, including the careful use of incentives, will be all the more crucial in the years to come.

But Wednesday was a day for admiring the $426-million plant put up by Caterpillar. At the plant, more than 500 full-time and contract workers will churn out axles and wheels for the company’s largest mining trucks. This is a growth enterprise, one that should remain stable for years to come, one not subject to, say, the whims of computer users.

Caterpillar was offered millions in incentives to locate in W-S.

Never fear, CAT’s not going to be like Dell.
