CBS’ preconceived notions of poverty

Update: The N&R reports the Strubles will be featured on the CBS Evening News tonight.

Interesting N&R article (unposted) on CBS’ interest in a struggling Greensboro family:

You might remember the Strubles.

In June, the News & Record featured them in “Losing Hope,” which detailed their descent from the middle class into the rank of the impoverished. Diane, her husband Todd, and their five kids, ages 6-17, laid bare their struggles of self-worth and day-to-day existence.

That’s what attracted CBS.

Once here, the network sought to interview other families in the Triad like the Strubles.

The results were mixed.

“In some ways, it was disappointing,” said the Rev. Mike Aiken, executive director of Greensboro Urban Ministry. “They had some preconceived notions of what they wanted.”

Yet another reminder of mainstream media bias, as if we needed another one.
