I tend to agree with economists from the Austrian and Chicago schools that socialized medicine is the straw that will break the camel’s back in preserving a free nation. Healthcare would be the most impossible of all entitlement programs to cut. People should not be dependent on government for food, clothing, shelter, and well-being. Government in a free country is supposed to protect people from assaults on their liberties. For government to require me in any way to procure healthcare on its terms and conditions is an assault on my liberty. Regulation drives costs up; liberty fosters creativity and prosperity. A more appropriate role for government would be to fight legislatively-sustained monopolies in the insurance and pharmacological trades, or defend the public against fraudulent malpractice suits that are causing doctors to overtreat clients. A lot of unintended consequences can be avoided by listening to conservative think tanks.
