Janie and Barry Freeman wouldn’t move their anti-war, anti-Army protest to a public sidewalk in Chapel Hill last Dec. 15, as requested, so Chapel Hill police arrested them and charged them with trespassing. The charges were dropped in February. Now the Freemans say police shouldn’t have handcuffed them. And now the Chapel Hill council wants the police department to look at alternatives to the policy of handcuffing anyone who is arrested. Is the council really willing to put a police officer at risk just so the anti-war crowd can feel warm and fuzzy when they violate someone else’s rights — such as those who own the private property on which they’re protesting? Police officers should be outraged by this suggestion.
