Chapel Hill town manager Roger Stancil wants the council to hike the property tax rate by 2 cents. That would put the town’s tax rate at 51.4 cents, on top of the county property tax rate of 85.8 cents per $100 in valuation. And the town also has a special school district tax.

“I don’t think people like tax increases, so I think that will be reflected in the reaction to it. But we’ve been throughout the whole recession without a tax increase, and we just can’t keep doing that,” Stancil said. “We’ve got to say no to some more things if we don’t want a tax increase.”

Now there’s an interesting concept: just say no.
