On the heels of the WRAL report that anarchists are emailing them to say the vandalism at the N.C. Republican Party office was “civil disobedience” (why not quote your sources, WRAL?), the folks at chapelhill.indymedia.org have interrupted their argument over whether Bush should be singled out and targeted or just impeached in order to chime in on the matter:
The mainstream media and police have been claiming that this incident was the result of an illegal protest organized by anarchist activists. WRAL reported that, “Police believe they are anarchists. On Hensley’s right forearm is an encircled ‘A’ – the symbol of anarchy – a symbol that was spray painted on the GOP headquarters sign and building Friday night.” However, the News and Observer mistakingly confused traditional anarchist activism with partisan politics in an editorial when it said, “Perhaps if they had done more grunt work within the system, such as driving voters to polls, putting up signs and making phone calls, their side would have done better.” Other recent press reports have said that the FBI is considering this act of property destruction an act of domestic terrorism. Even the very same News and Observer editorial reminds its readers that, “Civil disobedience is a proud tradition in this country.” This editorial and other openwire discussion have made connections between this political act and other examples of civil disobedience such as the Boston Tea Party.
Fortunately for us, who are underwriting this “independent” outfit, they pledge to keep us updated:
Indymedia is dedicated to providing the community with news and information with an active commitment towards a non-corporate perspective. For this reason, we have decided to report this protest in detail.
