This should surprise absolutely no one—-it looks like the Charlotte City Council taking a closer look at the proposal for a $175 million Major League Soccer stadium, just a few weeks after Mecklenburg County commissioners indicated they’d pull out if the city didn’t pitch in.
What changed? According to the Charlotte Observer:
The original deal called for the city to also spend $43.75 million. But former deputy city manager Ron Kimble, who is now working part time for the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, told council members Monday the city might now be asked to contribute $30 million toward the $175 million stadium.
Nothing will change politicians’ mind quicker than a little $10 million wiggle room. I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict all parties involved will ante up….in which case MLS will be more than happy to award the Queen City an expansion franchise….
