I cannot quite follow their logic, but the editorial board of the Charlotte Observer says that their endorsement for the Superintendent of Public Instruction race is a toss-up.

They argue that “it won’t matter much who’s in this office” because the Superintendent of Public Instruction has very little power. Yet, the superintendent job comes with a rather prominent soapbox. The question is whether the superintendent will use his or her position to rewrite classic children’s stories and entertain ideas from policy hessians OR keep the State Board of Education and Department of Public Instruction accountable for their many failed policies and dopey initiatives.

I am not sure that Richard Morgan is up to the challenge, but I know that June Atkinson is not. Regardless, the point is that the election for Superintendent of Public Instruction matters and it deserves more serious consideration from Observer editors.
