I can’t help but notice the Charlotte Observer trotting out its radio and television columnist to comment on light rail:

Folks in Mecklenburg already voted (twice) for a half-cent sales tax for mass transit. From that, we got the Lynx train, which is successful beyond all predictions. It not only attracts more passengers than it was expected to, it has made the whole region train crazy.

Trains are the love-puppies of mass transit. People don’t hug wheezing buses, nor do they sing the praises of clogged highways. But trains they love. Trains whoosh past traffic jams, stick to schedule and exude mechanical charm, clickety-clack.

People in North Meck want their commuter rail. People in University City want the Lynx extended their way, and leaders in Cabarrus County are inviting it up to Concord and Kannapolis.

‘Love puppies of mass transit’?
