A New York Times story on “black families leaving Chicago” led me to another story on the topic a year ago. The earlier story described Kristin Ware’s decision to move from Chicago to Charlotte for a lower cost of living, better schools, and “lots of opportunity.” Ware told WBUR

I’m raising a black male in America, so I want to make sure that I give him the opportunity to have affluent role models that he can be around and see successful black people. That’s important to me for him to see success.

This personal experience differs greatly from the reputation Charlotte gained in research by Raj Chetty and targeted by a program at UNC-Charlotte to expand opportunity in the Queen City.
