Charlotte Area Transit Authority has selected two firms “to begin discussions over the redevelopment of the Charlotte Transportation Center, potentially a nearly $400 million project.” More details here.

Note this is not just a transportation center; plans call for a a 20-story office building, a tower with 22 stories of residential units and an 8-story hotel. Also included are low-rise buildings with retail and “affordable housing.” But of course CATS said —according to the Uptown Paper of Record—“its intent is to maintain access to the bus facility, light rail and streetcar in any proposed development,” and any proposals must “include a plan for an interim location for the continued operation of the bus service during construction.”

We know how much Charlotte loves its transit-oriented development, and this without a doubt is the mother of all transit-oriented development projects.
