A Democratic state senator and representative joined Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina this morning to urge action on state legislation designed to lift North Carolina’s charter school cap.

In addition to comments from Sen. Malcolm Graham, D-Mecklenburg, Rep. Marcus Brandon, D-Guilford, and PEFNC’s Darrell Allison, the news conference below features remarks from Peter Groff, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, and Bishop Charles Mellette of Christian Provision Ministries in Sanford. Assembled reporters and charter school advocates also heard from Aniekan Affiah, a Durham fifth-grader, and her mother Colette. The Affiahs are from Nigeria. Aniekan sits on a waiting list for a Durham charter school after losing a lottery for a limited number of open charter slots.
