I mentioned yesterday that a new study by the National Center for Education Statistics found that charter schools were lagging behind public schools.

Jay Mathews of the Washington Post provides a good overview of the reaction from both sides. My favorite is from American Federation of Teachers President Edward J. McElroy, who said the report “provides further evidence against unchecked expansion of the charter school experiment.” That is a bit of a reach.

Eduwonk does a nice job of assessing the shortcomings of the report.

The AP report has been criticized by Eduwonk and others because it is awful. Notice how the writer inserts the sentence, “The Bush administration supports charter schools” for good measure.

The Center for Education Reform gets the last word.
