They have proposed a budget that increases school spending, cuts other spending without increasing the property tax.

The proposed $82.9 million budget of Chatham County cuts county spending $1.5 million, or 4 percent, from this year’s adopted budget.

The tax rate remains 62.2 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The owner of a $200,000 home would pay $1,243.80 cents in county property tax.

County funding of K-12 schools would increase 2 percent, while the county’s non-school operating budget would drop 8 percent.

Now the other 99 counties need to follow this example.
