Calling it “less than a desirable practice,” the N.C. elections board has voted to ask the General Assembly to outlaw a practice that helped ensure former Rep. Steve Wood never saw some campaign checks that were written to him.

Elections board chairman Larry Leake says the practice is not now against the law.

Evidence Wednesday showed that people tied to N.C. House Speaker Jim Black’s campaign solicited contributions for Wood while Black was trying to win Wood’s support for the speaker’s job.

Wood did not support Black, and Wood did not see any of the checks raised on his behalf.
