I heard Biz Journal editor Justin Cantanoso on WFDD this morning discussing the interesting subject of liquor by the drink as an economic development issue in Randolph County:

“I hate to say it, but the economic viability of Asheboro and this county might just ride on liquor by the drink,” says Walker Moffett, a local real estate developer. “If we don’t get it, we won’t shrivel up and blow away. But we will continue to dwindle.”

…..Ideally, the private sector folks would like to see a referendum on liquor by the drink later this year. They want a full, robust and honest debate. They want to highlight the potential for new restaurants and hotels, new service-industry jobs, even a new Marriott associated with the N.C. Zoo. They don’t want a civil war.

Marriott indeed will be hesitant to build in an area that doesn’t have liquor by the drink, Cantanoso added.

Update: I was speculating to a friend about Marriott’s hesitancy to build in an area that didn’t have liquor by the drink.

“And after a day at the zoo…….” she said. Amen, especially if you’re chasing after little ones. That damn place is big.

Then again, parents tend to be overly prepared people, even if they learn the skill out of necessity. They tend to pack in everything they need.
