OK, I was originally going to crack on the N&R for the lede in today’s N&R article on the recommended firing of a Greensboro police captain. See if you notice something strange:

Superiors of a Greensboro police captain have recommended his dismissal after a two-month investigation about internal grievances he helped officers write.

Capt. Charles Cherry, commanding officer of the eastern patrol division, was suspended without pay Thursday and recommended for firing because of his conduct and truthfulness.

My gut reaction was to ask how the reporter knows Cherry was being ‘truthful’ when presenting his side of the story following his suspension and psychological evaluation.

However, Yes!Weekly’s Jordan Green reports that Cherry’s “truthfulness and malicious gossip infractions relate to a statement made by the captain to the effect that retired Chief Tim Bellamy was at one time a complainant in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission matter that is now in the federal courts.”

The way I read it, “truthfulness” appears to be an official infraction within the Greensboro Police Department. Such is the state of municipal bureaucracy these days.
