WBT has bored into how CMS handled the case of child molester/teacher Jimmie Grubbs with depressing results. There can be no doubt that CMS security utterly bungled the case.

For a solid year CMS failed to pick up the phone and call Myrtle Beach police to report that Grubbs had taken at least one student to Myrtle Beach where he supposedly sexually abused them. It was Huntersville police that notified Myrtle Beach of the case even though CMS had repeatedly told Huntersville that they need not do anything more on the case.

There also seems to be serious confusion about what CMS law enforcement can and cannot do. They have arrest powers across Mecklenburg, not just on school grounds, as CMS seems to have implied. Further, if CMS security cannot be bothered to pick up the phone in a sex abuse case, just what the hell are they doing?

“The School Law Enforcement Department conducts investigations of alleged inappropriate conduct by employees and of crimes against school board property.” That is what CMS says this department does. But that does not include picking up the phone. There are about 20 people in that department, including over a dozen patrol officers. None of them had time to pickup the phone? This department has a $3 million budget. What do they do with that money?
