When talking CMS you are never far from some dysfunction. A new one is the Ed Center’s evident rejection of an offer from Nike to sponsor the Independence High football team. It is not called a sponsorship obviously, but it would amount to possibly thousands of dollars in free equipment for the team, currently owners of the nation’s best winning streak — an incredible 92 games.

If that is not worth a little recognition and, yes, reward it is hard to tell what might be. But no doubt the Ed Center has trouble with Nike routing money directly to Independence and Coach Tom Knotts. Knotts was slated to get a stipend from Nike, which pretty standard fare these days even in high school sports. The CMS bureaucrats would rather reject money they do not control than allow more resources into the system which, in turn, would free up more money for kids.

And people wonder why CMS needs explosive change.
