Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is putting on a full-court press to convince voters to approve the $427 million bond in November. In a new Rhino Times story not yet online we learn that CMS-TV along with memos and fliers are being used to push for a “yes” vote on the bond issue. One CMS parent did not like how his child’s school info packet became part of the campaign:
“I can’t believe I’m opening my child’s school folder and finding a flyer sent home from the Vote Yes For Bonds committee,” one parent who has children at Hawk Ridge Elementary School recently wrote to school board members. “What gives?”
The parent said his child came home not only with literature from the Vote Yes for Bonds committee, but also a flyer from school officials encouraging parents to vote for the $427 million school bonds next month. A CMS spokesperson said the flyer was distributed by the school’s PTA, not CMS.
“I think it’s outrageous,” the parent said in an interview this week. He asked to remain anonymous to avoid any possible repercussions for his children. “It’s very alarming when the government starts using taxpayer money to advertise and promote its own projects and philosophies. That’s not what the schools are supposed to be doing.”
CMS, as ever, is reviewing matters.
