I never watch CNN, but I decided to tune in before the Democratic festivities begin in prime time. What I saw in the five minutes I was a CNN viewer doesn’t auger well for CNN’s fairness and balance.

Wolf Blitzer was discussing the upcoming events of the evening by telling his panelists that Republicans were trying to paint Democrats with a liberal brush. Every mention of the word “liberal” by Wolf was qualified. He even said at one point that Republicans were calling Ted Kennedy “a member of the so-called liberal wing of the Democratic Party.” So-called? Wolf, get a clue!

Every other mention of the word “liberal” was followed by “they say” or some other disclaimer. Let’s see if he uses that same “objectivity” when the Republican convention rolls around.

Next, Gloria Borger asked Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine how it felt that Barack Obama said that if he’d named “his best friend” as the vice presidential candidate it would have been Tim Kaine. Wow, Gloria, way to take the gloves off. She actually told Kaine that this was one of “my tough questions.”

And finally, John King tried to convince people he was asking tough questions when he “rebutted” Kaine’s view that Virginia was leaning toward Obama. King pointed to something he called “one of my concerns,” which was that western Virginia went heavily for Hillary Clinton in the primary. One of his concerns?! Since when do reporters have “concerns” about the course of a campaign.

I can’t wait for the next four days. Someone kill me now.
