Although CNN briefly works in more recent issues such as the White Street landfill and council member Mary Rakestraw’s controversial redistricting plan, it’s pretty much the same stories featuring the same cast of characters: Woolworth sit ins, Klan-Nazi shootings, National Guard troops at N.C. A&T, Nelson Johnson, William Chafe, Skip Alston.

I’m a history major and I certainly don’t believe in burying the past. But there comes a point in time when focusing too much on the past holds us back. The thing is —as Dr. Guarino points out well— so-called progressives have had their chance to effect change in Greensboro just as they’ve had their chance to effect change in the country as a whole.

Yet we keep reading where nothing’s changed. So something’s not right somewhere.
