George is right.  The government should not collect racial statistics.

A few years ago, the Census Bureau sent me one of its multi-page
surveys.  I filled out my name, number and ages of the people in
my household and address and mailed it back.   I learned in
the Army that when you are an enemy captive, you give only your name,
rank, and serial number. Who says that Army training is not useful in
later life.

I started getting calls from the CB asking me to complete the
survey.   I explained to the nice bureaucrat, who after all
was just following orders, that the Constitution only required me to
give them information relevant to redistricting the US House of
Representatives.  He said that the law required me to answer all
of the questions and that I was breaking the law.  I told him that
the Constitution was superior to the law.  Finally reaching an
impasse, I responded that he should do what he had to do and I would do
what I had to do.

Following this conversation, I sent a letter to the CB stating my
decision not to answer its questions and I compared its collection of
racial information to Nazi Germany’s obsession with race.  I sent
a copy of my letter to my two senators and house member.  I
enclosed a copy of the CB page listing the racial categories, 25 to 30
categories at the time.  Surprise, I never heard from them again.
