The Chronicle of Higher Education today is reporting on how campuses
are preparing for a planned national protest Monday called “A Day
Without an Immigrant” to protest proposed legislation in Congress on
illegal immigration. The article quotes ideas from the Essential Worker
Immigration Coalition on how to handle the protest. Among the ideas
being that “employees consider the legal ramifications and negative
publicity if they decide to forbid employees to take the day off.”

Now
we all have a First Amendment right to protest on issues, but do
employers have to let people take a day off in order to protest?
