Whoa.

The State today laid off 38, plus instituted salary cuts. And check this passive-aggressive tone from publisher Henry B. Haitz III:

“The newspaper is profitable,” Haitz said of The State. “But, as you know, we are part of The McClatchy Co. and are working toward the goals of the overall company.”

The announcement also made clear that The Rock Hill Herald has shifted pre-press and print operations to Uptown.

Meanwhile, the hostility toward corporate HQ in far off Sacramento is worth watching. In fact, there is chatter that the Raleigh and Charlotte outlets are being pitted against each other in the current round of cuts, with Sacro more inclined to side with another state capital than a — perceived — fading bank town. In CLT’s favor, the big foot of the NFL and NASCAR.

Stay tuned.
