In their never-ending effort to ruin the earth, coal-fired power plants now want to destroy (registration probably required) two endangered plants — the eastern prairie fringed orchid and leafy prairie clover — and two endangered birds — the northern harrier and Henslow’s sparrow.

Illinois wants to build a series of these power plants, all of which would be equipped with the most up-to-date emissions controls.

“I know it sounds horrible, building a huge power plant next to a national prairie,” said David Kolaz, chief of the Illinois EPA’s air bureau. “But these endangered creatures and plants grew and thrived when this site was the dirty Joliet Arsenal. We don’t see any reason why this project shouldn’t proceed.”

But we all know that appearances matter more than reality, don’t we, Joel Schwartz?
