On the South Side of Chicago, where Barack Obama worked as a community organizer in 1985, the murder rate exceeds military deaths in Iraq:

An estimated 123 people were shot and killed over the summer. That’s nearly double the number of soldiers killed in Iraq over the same time period. …

he South Side’s Englewood District, which includes the Englewood and West Englewood neighborhoods on the city’s South Side, fared the worst over the summer. A total of 14 people were shot dead there, and 48 were shot and wounded.

Speaking of Obama’s work as a community organizer, check out this story from the LA Times from March:

Ensuring that swings have seats and sandboxes are free of glass might not seem requisite skills for a man who could be president of the United States. But associates say Obama’s approach to the unglamorous task illustrates his style as a community organizer – an experience he cites as “the best education I ever had,” qualifying him to unite a racially and socially fractured nation and “create change from the bottom up.”

And compare it to any number of mainstream media hit jobs on Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin over the past week.
