I’ve written before about the discrepancy in construction costs between Guilford County Schools and Winston-Salem-Forsyth County Schools.

Now we learn the WSFCS school board has awarded the contract for the new Walkertown Middle-High School to R.L. Casey Inc. (not Lyon Construction) for $29.8 million. Compare that to $43 million for Northern Guilford High School and $60 million for the new Eastern Guilford High School, not to mention $71 million for the proposed airport-area high school that was part of the $457 million bond package passed in 2008. I realize the prevailing wisdom among government officials these days is contractors are bottom-feeding because of the economy. But we’re still talking some huge cost differences here.

By the way, this is Forsyth’s partisan school board at work. The brains down at the General Assembly evidently saw the need to fix something that’s not broken.
