Congratulations to all recipients of dropout prevention grants for 2010. I would like to give a special shout-out to Rev. William Barber, President of the North Carolina NAACP, who serves as chairman of the Rebuilding Broken Places Community Development Corporation. The development corporation will receive $173,000 in state funds to work with students from Dillard Middle School, Wayne County Schools.

In December 2009, Barber filed a civil rights complaint against the Wayne County Schools. According to one news article, “In that complaint, the Wayne County School Board is accused of deliberately reassigning white students to schools outside of Goldsboro, thus making Goldsboro City school virtually 99 percent black.” NC DPI statistics indicate that approximately 97 percent of the students at Dillard are black.

Again, hats off to the grant recipients!
