The mainstream media commentary on the election of Pope Francis has been fascinating – and predictable. The Pope is being described as theologically conservative, but also a man of the poor — as if the two are incompatible. They are not of course. Pope Francis is indeed a defender of Church teaching, including the dignity of human life from conception to natural death. He is also a man who reaches out to help the poor, which is central to Church teaching. No surprise that some of the so-called analysts seem to have little understanding of Catholic teaching.
