A story in the Middletown (NY) Times Herald-Record
allows an anonymous “Mom” to bash Army recruiters. This anonymous Mom
makes several pointed comments about the recruiters pursuing her
daugher, including this one:
“You know, God bless the people who can go and serve our country,” she
said, “I’m a Republican “? I do feel safer, but in the same breath, I
think we all just want this war to end.”
A mainstream media ploy is to find a Democratic or liberal talking
point delivered by a conservative or a Republican. Like the seminar
callers on Rush Limbaugh’s show, they always pointedly, and awkwardly, mention they are
Republican or conservative. Like the callers to Rush, something about the above comment is
suspicious. Note the extra quote mark and the vertical dash after “I’m
a Republican.” It’s almost as if a copy editor decided to give this
anonymous mom an extra bit of legitimacy. Of course, we’ll never know
because we have no way of knowing if “Montgomery Mom” is a real person.
