Like many cities, Wilmington has jumped on the bandwagon for a taxpayer-supported convention center. Problem is, the market for facilities outside of major cities has been trending down for decades, wrote Chad Adams in a commentary published last week at www.starnewsonline.com — the web site of the Wilmington Star. Those pushing the center say it will create 1,200 new jobs and $1.5 million in new revenue. To pay for it, the legislature has approved a new 3 percent hotel tax. Adams noted that Greensboro’s Koury Center is a successful private venture, leaving that area’s taxpayers out of the equation.
