Local MoveOn.org activists protested crony capitalism by picketing Bank of Americas in Hendersonville and Asheville. GE, Google, BP, Amazon, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Boeing, ExxonMobil, FedEx, Goldman Sachs and Chase are other organizations protested because they paid no federal income taxes last year. Bank of America claims it operated at a loss, so it benefits from a system that makes well-managed operations pay more to support the inefficient ones. Other businesses have reputations for retaining “legions of lobbyists” to legitimize what would otherwise be tax evasion.
MoveOn is correct. However, protesters interviewed express strange views about the role of government and advocates of limited government. One has the unsettling feeling a more insidious force is behind the present attacks.
