Mecklenburg County’s wild spending days caught up with the commissioners yesterday in Ballantyne. The county is short $90m. while the debt bomb it ignited ticks away in the background.
County manager Harry Jones has flogged the county toward delaying some $253m. in bonds for CMS, CPCC, parks and land. That’ll save $18m. in debt service cost and also help nudge the county away from a free-fall in its debt rating.
But that still leaves the county some $70m. short. Next up, the city.
Bonus Observation: If past trends continue, look for the county unemployment rate to hit 9 per cent soon.
