To balance its budget after state cuts, UNCA funded administrative positions with student activity fees. This is in violation of the UNC Policy Manual. UNCA officials would not cooperate with a request from the student newspaper to divulge how many administrative positions were funded by student fees. Legal counsel for the newspaper disagreed with their claim that the information was not a matter of public record. This degenerated into a controversy over the definition of administrative. The two positions identified as having received funding from student fees were both “assistant vice chancellors in student affairs.” Fees contributed $37,500 to their salaries. One person alleged eight positions were funded with student fees, includintg the “administrative assistant in the sales office.” Each student paid an activity fee of $645.50 this year.
