Emily Fuleihan writes in the latest issue of Carolina Review (November 2004, not online) about professors abusing their classrooms to sound off on politics. Such as:

? Chemistry professor Gary Glisch “starts every day by showing a political cartoon or quote attacking President Bush or the Republican Party.”

? Drama professor Karen Blansfield opining in her class, “Maybe this year we can get a president that is actually literate.”

Fuleihan reports that “many of the students who provided information for this article were afraid to have their names, or even their professors’ names, used in print, for fear that they would receive a failing grade or be otherwise punished by the professor for speaking out.” Two examples:

? A journalism professor assigned students “to cover speeches given only by Democrat candidates” and “encouraged [them] to attend only Democrat events. Furthermore, every in-class speaker was an almost self-proclaimed liberal who attacked the president. When a student challenged one speaker’s points, she was met with attacks and insults.”

? A Spanish teacher who announces, “I don’t believe in capitalism. Haven’t you ever heard of communism?”

I really would like to know the Spanish professor’s name. I want to ask her if she’s ever heard of the 100 million plus who were killed under Communist regimes. I’d also offer to “liberate” her of all her capital, since she doesn’t believe in it.
