And I thought I had an intense reaction to the possibility that the Orange County commissioners will regulate or ban drive-thru windows because they’ve decided that idling in the line is killing the planet.

Now comes this editorial from the Daily Tar Heel, which says the idea “is absurd and only reinforces the stigma of snobbery and environmental sensitivity that the Chapel Hill area so infamously harbors.” It continues (emphasis is mine):

The fact is that the conveniences associated with drive-throughs trump any granola-esque argument about the harmful effects of minor auto emissions.

Having drive-throughs would actually offset the need for restaurant or bank parking and would therefore reduce the amount of land used for construction.

Not only would an initiative to ban drive-throughs throughout the entire county cause an inconvenience for its citizens, it would arguably hurt local businesses.

People would be more inclined to pick up Wendy’s if they had the option of zipping through a drive-through. It’s much more inconvenient to have to park and walk into Starbucks to get your morning cup of joe.

The goal of the Board of Commissioners meeting was to determine the public’s reaction to the proposal which will be decided on in April or May.

Well, here’s our reaction: Environmental fanatics and architectural snobs, get over yourselves.

By the way, what are the chances that UNC’s speech police would consider this editorial “hurtful”?
