Dan Rather must be courting Obama to appoint him media czar.

How else do you explain his bizarre column, published Sunday in the Washington Post, calling on Obama to appoint a blue-ribbon commission (don’t worry — it would be bi-partisan) to “assess the state of the news as an institution and an industry and to make recommendations for improving and stabilizing both.”

Rather is doubtless calling in his I.O.U for that elaborate falling-on-the-sword ceremony from 2004.

Remember Rather’s September surprise when George W. Bush was running for election? He based a number of reports on forged documents in an attempt to discredit Bush and give John Kerry something of an assist. The plan blew up in short order.

If not media czar, Rather should at least head up the blue-ribbon commission, along with sub-lieutenants Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann…just to keep things objective and non-partisan.
