Asheville City Council passed a resolution opposing Amendment One tonight. They’re only the latest in a long chain of legislative bodies to do so. Search engines rank high he-said-she-said on the issue, so I’ll give you a link to the dinky bill.

Tonight, Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell announced that the John Locke Foundation had taken a stance against the amendment. I have not yet outgrown the agitation I feel when people act as if independent thought, reason, and pursuit of conscience are myths. President John Hood said he was against the amendment, but a mind-meld with our fearless leader has never been a condition of affiliation – even though it would make me much more intelligent.

For the record:

  • I have no opinion today, except the amendment impresses me as a loaded gun ready to backfire. Silly conclusions will be drawn regardless of the stance one takes.
  • The gut feeling I had before reading the bill was that it may have been crafted by conceptual opponents to make supporters look stinky. Then again, I just plain don’t know.
  • I distrust legislation because I suspect evil gotchas are hiding between every line.
  • Exactly what is the amendment saying, anyway?
  • I oppose government licensure as a general rule. It is a way to get money for nothing from the private sector.
  • This appears to be a faith-based initiative. Jesus did went about his Father’s business by expending his own time and energy on the needy. He didn’t ask government to take the wheel and make everything all right.
  • As a corollary, my faith in the power of legislation to bring about God’s eternal purposes is zilch.
  • I harbor religious beliefs supporting the traditional concept of marriage, and I harbor religious beliefs against coercing others to comply with my covenants.
  • I don’t equate disdain for special privileges with homophobia. Created “rights” for special classes necessarily disadvantage other classes, initiating an ongoing power struggle that is always out of equilibrium.
  • I love gay people, and I love straight people – platonically.
  • I got involved in all this political nonsense to defend liberty against an ever-encroaching government. To those who continue to associate embarrassing discussions of “adult content” with government and economic prosperity, I implore you, “Baby, take it somewhere else!”
