The atmosphere is getting decidedly unfriendly in the 8th Congressional District, as the GOP continues to tussle over who is the best candidate to face Democratic incumbent Larry Kissell in the fall.

Now, top vote getter Tim D’Annunzio (who took home 37 percent of the vote in the primary, just a shade short of the 40 percent needed to avoid a runoff) is calling on GOP Chairman Tom Fetzer to resign after Fetzer told The Charlotte Observer that D’Annunzio was unfit for command.

Charlotte’s WCNC-TV reports:

Republican congressional candidate Tim D’Annunzio fired back at GOP leaders who’ve spoken out against his controversial campaign Monday, demanding that the chairman of the North Carolina GOP step down.

“Chairman Fetzer broke the Plan of Organization of the Republican Party by speaking against my candidacy,” he said. “I am officially calling for Chairman Fetzer to step down. He should resign the position.”

The in-fighting could have far-reaching implications since the 8th District is North Carolina’s one true swing district this cycle and the most likely to switch parties.
