Tired of eating its own lunch, Davidson County Schools signs off on a new policy designed to curb debt on unpaid school lunches.

I’m all for saving the school system money, but some might look at this policy and think it’s overly harsh, especially when collection agencies and DSS gets involved over bills less than a hundred bucks.

The new policy would take affect once a charge against a student’s account reaches $11.25. At that point, the student’s home would be contacted each day and the student would only be given a lunch meal choice of peanut butter and jelly sandwich or cheese sandwich with milk, and a breakfast choice of cereal or toast and milk.

If the charges reach $37.50, the account would be referred to a collection agency.

If a student’s charges exceed $75, the Davidson County Department of Social Services may be contacted in relation to potential student neglect.
