In a 5-2 vote, the Thomasville City Council released a $20,000 contribution to Davidson Vision, the county’s economic development organization.

But guess what? Some council members are wondering what Davidson Vision has done with the $100,000 the city’s already handed out:

Dwight Cornelison and Raleigh York, who convinced the other members to freeze the appropriation during the budget vote last June, opposed the release…..

York said his concern then had been a lack of accounting for the $100,000 Thomasville previously gave Davidson Vision. He referenced a set of measurable goals Davidson Vision published during its first fundraising campaign.

“To date, I have still not received the information of the things they accomplished with the first monies that were given,” York said Monday night….

…Cornelison questioned whether the organization’s focus has shifted.

“If I’m not mistaken, when they first came here, their goals were job-related,” he said. “How much business and industry have they recruited? I understand now that they’re pushing education more, but I know at first it was more job-related.”

Fellow councilman Joe Hedgepeth admitted as much:

“They have done a very good program in our schools, particularly the Thomasville schools,” he said.

I don’t even know where to start with this one. So you have an organization that takes city money to recruit jobs, but apparently can’t do so without the help of economic incentives. Then the organization’s defenders turn around and say well, they’re helping out the school system, which in turn is doing who-knows-what with its money.

Kind of crazy, isn’t it?
