…Taxpayers, of course.

Negotiations between Davis Garage owner Harvey Davis and the City of Winston-Salem are still stalled. The city wants the former Union Station for a downtown transportation hub and are worried if they don’t get it, Winston-Salem could be left off a nationwide high-speed rail system.

Let’s analyze this deal, based on the Winston-Salem Journal’s reporting. City bureaucrats get their money in the form of a $2.4 million federal grant. Davis gets his $1.5 million from the city, and developer Bill Cannon gets $400,000 “for overseeing the project before construction.”

And what would taxpayers get? A high-speed rail line that very few of them will ride.
