The city of Charlotte, CMPD, and the Mecklenburg County district attorney’s office is edging nearer to a full-blown mea culpa for its handling of the Kim Thomas murder case. Should new DNA evidence indicate that Marion Gales killed Kim Thomas an indelible stain will be left on Charlotte’s criminal justice system.

The plain fact is that if Ed Friedlander had not been a smart, wealthy doctor who was able to mount and sustain a credible defense he would have been convicted of murder by Peter Gilchrist’s office and CMPD.

Knowing how things work around here, my guess is that CMPD and the DA’s office will drag out bringing any charges against this “person of interest” until Gilchrist and his crew retire at the end of the year.

That sounds like a long time away, but after 20 years, not really.
